reCAP: NC beer enthusiasts help clear the cellar for Spanky’s/ncbrewing.org

On Friday, January 20, 2012, Spanky’s Restaurant & Bar in Chapel Hill, NC, in collaboration with ncbrewing.org, held a cellar-clearing event that featured rare, one-off and limited-release beers from North Carolina breweries.

Gavin Toth, floor/bar manager and resident beer enthusiast at Spanky’s, deemed the gathering of North Carolina beer enthusiasts “a huge success.” With over 400 pints of North Carolina beer sold, which includes half-pints sales as well, Toth noted that the restaurant had ”one of the best nights in beer sales overall,…which is pretty amazing.”

The first North Carolina keg of the night to kick was The Dark Mark from The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery in Charlotte, NC. Ryan Self, director of sales for Olde Meck, personally delivered the “first time and only time” beer, a “dark Munich lager, aged over smoked oak chips soaked in Maker’s Mark,” to Chapel Hill for the event. Big Boss Brewing Co.‘s Sack Time Amber Rye Ale was the next beer to run out, followed by NoDa Brewing Co.’s Midnight Madness Cascadian Dark Ale.

In addition to Self from Olde Meck, other North Carolina brewery representatives attended the event to support the state’s brewing community, including Sean Wilson and Amanda Shapiro of Fullsteam Brewery, Joe Zonin of Carolina Brewing Co., Harmony Schilling of LoneRider Brewing Co., Ben Woodward and Dawnya Bohager of Haw River Farmhouse Ales, Andrew Jalbert, Jason Romines, Lee Kuivila and Brian Barr of Aviator Brewing Co., Will Isley and Andrew Scharfenberg of Steel String Brewery and Erik Lars Myers and Chris Shields of Mystery Brewing Co.
